Legacy West And Legacy North Aren't The Same Night Out Anymore

Legacy West And Legacy North Aren't The Same Night Out Anymore

For years, "let's go to Legacy" meant one thing: cross the tollway, park somewhere, pick a place from a dining list that blurred together after a while. That stopped being true this year. Legacy West and Legacy North sit on opposite sides of the Dallas North Tollway, and in 2026 they started pulling in opposite directions. One side leaned into sport and spectacle. The other leaned into an exclusive, reservations-only social scene. If you've lived in Plano long enough to have a default answer when someone asks where to eat, that default just got more complicated, and more interesting.

Legacy West picked sport and spectacle

Legacy West has always been the luxury-retail side of the district, home to Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., David Yurman and Tom Ford. This year it added a second identity on top of that: sport energy, timed almost exactly to the World Cup.

Adidas opened its fifth Dallas-Fort Worth store at Legacy West this summer, joining locations in Fort Worth, Grapevine, Grand Prairie and Allen. A company representative described the space as designed to reflect local energy, creativity and community, with product assortments specific to the Dallas market rather than a generic national lineup. The timing wasn't incidental. Legacy West used the store's opening to launch a run of soccer-themed activations, including a themed art installation, positioning the district as a place to feel World Cup energy even though the matches themselves were happening 40 miles away in Arlington. That energy had a real source: Frisco's Toyota Stadium served as Sweden's national team base camp for the tournament, and the buzz from thousands of fans watching open training sessions there spilled into every North Texas suburb that wanted a piece of it. Legacy West just happened to build a storefront around it.

Retail wasn't the only new arrival leaning into that same energy. 7th Avenue, a Los Angeles-based furniture brand known for modular sofas with machine-washable, water-repellent covers, opened its fifth Texas showroom and third Dallas-area location at Legacy West in July, joining existing showrooms in Dallas' West Village and Southlake. Company leadership framed the move as a response to growing customer interest across North Texas rather than a speculative bet.

"Every showroom reflects the community it's in, and Plano is no exception."

That's co-founder Josh Stinson, and it's a fair description of what Legacy West has become this year: a place built around visible, photograph-ready lifestyle moments, whether that's a flagship sneaker wall or an outdoor furniture collection styled for a Texas patio.

Legacy North picked exclusivity and reservations

Cross back over the tollway and the story is almost the opposite. Legacy North has spent years building its identity around established, reservations-driven restaurants rather than retail spectacle: The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Benihana, Mexican Sugar, Café Istanbul, Sakhuu Thai and Ebb & Flow anchor roughly 121,000 square feet of restaurant-heavy retail there. This year, that identity changed hands. The Shops at Legacy North sold for approximately $78 million in January to Albanese Cormier, a retail owner with properties across 18 states, marking the company's first acquisition in North Texas.

New ownership brought a new social anchor. Legacy Club, a 20,000-square-foot members-only space, opened this spring in the former WeWork space at Legacy North. It's built around five distinct rooms, including The Arena, a Vegas-style sports bar, and Wild Orchid, a garden-inspired lounge with live music, tea service and wine events, plus a full-service restaurant serving sushi, seafood and Texas steaks. Where Legacy West is chasing foot traffic with a flagship store and a soccer-themed photo opportunity, Legacy North is betting on a private, application-only social club that most passersby won't ever get inside.

That's the split. One side of the tollway wants you to walk in off the street and buy something. The other wants you to apply for membership first.

The corridor between them got louder too

None of this happened in a vacuum. Plano overall had one of its busiest years for restaurant openings in recent memory, and most of it landed outside the two Legacy anchors entirely, which is worth knowing if your radius for "going out" has quietly shrunk to just those two centers.

  • Pappalecco opened its first Texas location on January 10 at 1009 14th St., its fourth location overall, serving specialty coffees, pastries and gelato.
  • Kirin Court opened November 25, 2025, with a full Chinese menu including dim sum, Beijing duck and hot pot, joining its existing Richardson location.
  • Urban Egg opened December 15, 2025, at 2408 Preston Road, the Colorado-based brand's 12th location nationally and second in Texas after Fort Worth.
  • Desperados, a Dallas-founded Tex-Mex restaurant marking its 50th anniversary this year, opened a third location in Willow Bend Market.
  • J. Alexander's opened its first Dallas-Fort Worth location at 3980 Dallas Parkway in early 2026, hiring 90 to 100 staff for its wood-fired steak and seafood menu.
  • Ichika opened as Texas's first kaiseki-dedicated restaurant, one of the few kappo-style dining experiences in the country.
  • The Peach Cobbler Factory opened February 28, its 12th Texas location for the Nashville-founded dessert chain.

Add in The Henry, a Dallas neighborhood favorite set to open a second DFW location inside Legacy West later this year, and the picture gets clearer: Plano's restaurant scene didn't just add volume this year, it added range. You can get a first-in-Texas kaiseki tasting menu and a 50-year-old Tex-Mex institution within a few miles of each other, and neither one is at Legacy West or Legacy North.

Legacy Hall is still the place that doesn't ask you to choose

If Legacy West and Legacy North are drifting apart, Legacy Hall sits in the middle as the one place that still lets you do a bit of both without committing to either identity. The three-story food hall on Windrose Avenue added a pet-friendly patio policy this year, letting guests bring dogs onto the Box Garden while ordering from its roughly 20 food stalls and five bars, including a homemade peanut butter "puppuccino" for the dog and duck fat fried chicken for everyone else. It's a low-stakes option on a night when you don't want to decide between a sneaker store activation and a members-only lounge you're not signed up for yet.

What this actually means for a Tuesday night

If you've been treating the district as one interchangeable option, it's worth being more specific about what you're actually in the mood for before you drive over. Want to feel the World Cup energy without a ticket to Arlington? Legacy West is building its whole summer around that. Want a reservation-only dinner at a place that isn't trying to be Instagram bait? Legacy North's restaurant row, or Legacy Club if you can get in, is the better bet. Want to skip the choice entirely? Legacy Hall is still open seven days a week and doesn't care which side of the tollway you came from.

None of this changes the property values or the school zones or anything else people search for when they're deciding whether to move here. It changes what you tell your out-of-town cousin when they ask what's actually new. The honest answer this year is that the two halves of Legacy stopped being the same answer.

If you're already settled in Plano and just wanted to know what changed, that's the whole story. But if this is the year you're weighing a move within the neighborhood, closer to one side of that tollway or the other, Cardinal Realty Group knows both sides well enough to tell you which one actually fits how you live.
